Valley Farms

This painting creates a very dramatic scene with the overpowering mountains looking over the small homes and fields.  Ross Dickinson uses bright colors with dark shading in the painting to create a strong and vibrant setting.  The depth of the image is well demonstrated with close hills and river that start big and fade into a small line.  I would imagine the valleys to be a very quite and peaceful place by the rolling hills and green fields.  The smoke coming off of the fire creates a sense of smell reminding me of summer nights sitting around a bonfire.  The river and fields make me believe that this is a self reliant community because the fields provide food and the river supplies fresh water for the people daily.

Loneliness

Slim is a leader and is in charge of a lot of people during the day.  At night, he hangs out in the bunkhouse with is friends playing cards and talking.  Slim does not have a companion but he is the second right hand man of the owner of the ranch.  He is lonely without a lover, bu with his job and his friends, it equals out.
